Today, August 7 happens to be the World Friendship Day- a day that's meant to celebrate bonding, love and trust in the invaluable name of Dosti. Here's a list comprising some foes who could have ushered in a change had they buried the hatchet and reached out to each other. Read on
India & Pakistan: Beyond stretches of imagination, the sub-continent would have been much more peaceful without being on the verge of a nuclear war. Imagine no Kargil, no 26/11 and no Patahnkot. Innocent civilians would not have lost their lives on both sides of the border and a peaceful solution to the Kashmir mess would have emerged. Outfits like IS, LeT, JuD and others would have been rendered redundant. The two nations would have faced the rest of world as forces to reckon with. NSG, Security Council and other world bodies might have had a joint and stronger Indo-Pak presence.
Mulayam Singh Yadav & Mayawati: They hate each other and their enmity is legendary. But imagine a scenario when the two political rivals decide to bid adieu to their enmity that transgresses political boundaries. BSP and SP as one political outfit would pose a stiff challenge to the rise of communal powers like BJP in Uttar Pradesh. The Dalit, OBC vote share of the two means, their rivals stand nowhere near them. And the prospects of a Federal Front against BJP and Congress would be brighter than ever. If Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar can be friends, Mayawati and Mulayam too can. But...!!
Mamata Banerjee & Surya Kanta Mishra: Even a political novice would know that Mamatadi hates even the sight of the shadow of a Leftist. They don't see eye-to-eye and at times, it seems that they have personal scores to settle. But had they been friends, then like in Uttar Pradesh, secular forces would have got a shot-in-the-arm. Didi calls herself a Leftist as well, so imagine a world where Suryada and Didi are sitting in the same row in the West Bengal Assembly.
Greg Chappell and Sourav Ganguly: The former Indian captain minces no words when it comes to expressing his animosity towards Chappell. He blames the Aussie legend for not only ensuring he was stripped of captaincy, but also for playing a pivotal role to 'throw' Ganguly out of the team. But had they buried their differences, Chappell could have had a prolonged run as the Team India coach and probably, Indian cricket would have seen better days, probably a much more credible show in the 2007 ICC World Cup. Post-retirement, Ganguly, the administrator wouldn't have thought twice to use Chappell's expertise to spot young talents. After all, it was the Prince of Calcutta who backed Chappell's candidature as the coach of the Indian cricket team.
Mukesh Ambani & Anil Ambani: They are not friends, but brothers or estranged brothers. Their acrimony over the property left behind by their father Dhirubhai Ambani is part of folklore. The two business tycoons are not on the best of terms, but had they compromised their greed and were partners of the Reliance Empire, just imagine the growth the company would have witnessed. Keep wondering...
Raghuram Rajan & Subramanian Swamy: The current RBI Governor would never forgive the BJP Rajya Sabha MP for launching a tirade against him that ultimately 'forced' him not to seek a second term. One missile after another directed at Raghuram wasn't music to his ears. But had Swamyji shown some patience and restraint in his choice of words and advised Raghuram instead of admonishing him, probably, Indian economy would have dreamt bigger than ever beyond September when the current RBI Governor calls it a day.
Salman Khan & Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: Beyond doubt, the ex-love birds would have been one of the cutest and successful jodis in the history of Indian cinema and could have been in the same league as SRK-Kajol, Amitabh Bachchan-Rekha, Dilip Kumar-Madhubala, Dharmendra-Hema Malini, to mention a few. The chemistry between the two was electrifying in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, but a bitter fight and the two parted ways both personally and professionally. Sad for Bollywood, isn't it so?
Also worth a thought would be: J Jayalalithaa & M Karunanidhi, Leander Paes & Mahesh Bhupathi, MS Dhoni & S Sreesanth, Jatin & Lalit, Salman Khan & Vivek Oberoi and Akshay Kumar & Priyanka Chopra.
Happy Friendship Day
