Let's move on Champions, time to wish the team well

Ravi Shastri and Sourav Ganguly are two of the most respected personalities in Indian cricket. What they say matters and is taken seriously. But the current spat between the two former India captains doesn’t augur well for the game especially for wannabes who have dreams in their eyes.

True, Shastri is disappointed at having lost his job to Anil Kumble and he has the right to express his sentiments. But at a time when Indian cricket is passing through a transitional phase, he would do better to put an end to this controversy for good.

Media will speculate. Reports suggest Ganguly who was not present at the time of Shastri’s presentation had a hand in pushing the latter out of contention for the Indian coach’s job. And Shastri minces no words taking his ire on The Prince of Calcutta.

But, how long will this war of words continue? Ganguly has maintained a dignified stance throughout the episode. But knowing his aggressive nature, he might as well retaliate in his own way which would be washing dirty linen in public. But in the process, Indian cricket will suffer.

Shastri who was in charge of Team India for close to two years does have his fans in the team including Test skipper Virat Kohli. This open mud-slinging will only create confusion in the minds of the cricketers especially the youngsters. This could make Kumble’s job tougher as coach and internal bickering can cost the team dear.

There’s no denying the fact that Shastri has one of the shrewdest cricketing brains in the country. The Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) may consider using his expertise for the betterment of Indian cricket. But given the current scheme of things, it’s unlikely that BCCI would be keen on giving the former all-rounder an important portfolio.

As true icons, one would expect Ganguly and Shastri to let bygones be bygones and work towards seeing better days for Indian cricket.

Whether he likes it or not, Shastri has to come to terms with the fact that Kumble has replaced him. So the anger has to subside after a certain point of time.

So, let’s move on guys and wish the team well.
