Trailer launch of the film on anti-Sikh riots, 1984

When former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was shot at by her own bodyguards eventually leading to her death on October 31, 1984, the media worldwide was drawn into it. And director Shivaji Lotan Patil thought it wise enough to make a film on the aftermath of Gandhi's death that had severe repercussions on the Sikh community.  31st October, a film on the anti-Sikh riots in 1984 had its trailer launch in Mumbai on Wednesday, August 31.

The event was attended by lead actors Vir Das and Soha Ali Khan, producer Harry Sachdeva and Patil. According to Sachdeva, “We have made this film because we wanted this generation to see and know what had happened in 1984 when the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated. We have not made this film as a political statement, but as a tribute to all those who came together to display acts of heroism by saving their Sikh brethren during the riots.”

Das, who plays the protagonist Devender Singh, said, “It was quite a challenging role for me as I am neither a Sikh nor a father, so for me to bring out the emotions of a family man desperate to save his family from violence, was a new experience. Having said that, I am really happy that I got to play this role and I hope everyone likes it.” Soha playing Devender's wife in the film said, "This film is neither about politics nor about any particular community. This is the story of a family and their survival against all odds.”

31st October will release on October 7.
