If Bihar's Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar grabbed national headlines
courtesy his crusade against liquor consumption, his counterpart in
Odisha, Naveen Patnaik locked horns with the Chattisgarh government over
the latter's decision to build barrages over the Mahanadi river. And
the Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal is a national phenomenon
thanks to his daily jibes at our Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Didi or Mamata Banerjee heading West Bengal, nope Bangla/Bengal/Bangal was waiting for the right opportunity to make a mark nationally when her friends aiming at setting up the Federal Front to challenge Modi and Congress in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls had the edge over her.
And the lady from Kalighat, Kolkata owes it to the Supreme Court which vindicates her stand on land grabbing by the Tatas, as the apex court rules that the Tatas should part ways with the 997 acres of land in Singur (given to it by the Left Front government) for building the Nano factory. Mamatadi who broke the 34-year-old Left Front citadel capitalising on Singur and Nandigram in the West Bengal, oops Bangla elections, in 2011, is on cloud nine.
The Supreme Court verdict also catapults her to national stardom, something she was left behind on by her compatriots dreaming of a Federal Front against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress. Didi couldn't have asked for more when back home, she is castigated for failing to stop attacks on teachers, bring industries to the state and proving to be a disaster in providing security to her voters and non-voters too. Even a 12-year-old minor isn't spared by lascivious cab drivers. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for the year 2015 shows Didi's state in a poor light. The advent of the so-called syndicates despite her message to punish the culprits still looms large.
But Didi isn't immature politically. One may scoff at her for making a mockery of herself with her juvenile statements, yet, when you assess her intentions behind renaming her state, political ambitions prevail over her state's interests. Never before a state or a country has fought for three names describing it. But the Bengal CM takes an unusual route. If it's Bangla in Bengali, it's Bengal in English and Bangal in Hindi. In one stroke, she pampers the Anglo-Indian community, the sentiment of the average Bengali and the section of Hindi speaking residents in the state respectively.
Aware of the rise of BJP (which has three seats in the state Assembly), she is leaving no stones unturned to gain proximity with the people beyond the Bengali-speaking clan. In the process, she makes her presence felt not just in her home state, but all across the country.
She understands the importance of votes and this is the reason she doesn't mention the word pork, when she espouses the cause of freedom to eat. Call her actions childish, rest assured, you are living in a fool's paradise. The Federal Front, she wants to lead even from behind might be wishful thinking, but Didi is not the one to sacrifice when it comes to calling the shots. At the same time, she keeps her options open by preferring to be not aggressively vocal on the disturbances on the campuses of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the University of Hyderabad. She needs the Modibhai's support to get rid of the Saradha and Narada scams and in her own inimitable style, she plays the political game.
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill is yet to be ratified by the Bengal Assembly. Relax, eventually, it will be cleared by the Bidhan Sabha, but not before some acts of histrionics on Didi's part.
Yes, Mamata Banerjee has risen in the ranks and refuted the age-old notion that she goes by emotions at the political level. Kudos to her for finally learning the tricks of the trade, but how far the people from her state will reap the benefits of the rebirth of Didi, is a question that seeks answers.
