Saturday, July 23 happens to be the 160th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak. To commemorate the occasion, www.mintageworld.com an online museum for vintage coins, stamps and currency notes launched a docudrama on on the history of stamps and coins introduced to celebrate his life, struggle and triumph of the Indian Freedom Struggle.
Looking back, there have been numerous launches of coins and stamps as a tribute to the legendary freedom fighter. To give you a lowdown, on the eve of his 1st birth centenary in 1956, Indian Post launched a 2-anna stamp. On Tilak’s 150th birth anniversary in 2007 a unique Re. 1 stamp was issued by the Indian Post.
To celebrate the 40th Independence Day on August 15, 1987, a painting by Late MF Hussain was
converted to a 60 paisa stamp. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued issued coins of Rs. 5 and Rs. 100 in 2007. Both have an image of Tilak on the reverse with the inscription “150th Birth Anniversary of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak” in English and “Lokmanya Tilak ki 150 vi Jayanti” in Hindi.
The docudrama can be caught on https://www.youtube.com/watch?
